As a scholar of investment fraud, Frankel has studied cases for years to find common themes and patterns. The books offers descriptions of the offers and red flags the ways in which fraudsters mask their deception through their methods of advertising and pitching their "product".

There is a lot in the book. I just wish there were more. It's hard to lump Enron, Madoff, Multi-level marketing, selling the Brooklyn Bridge, and selling fake securities fraud schemes into one book, especially one as short as this.

Frankel skips from subject to subject and fraud to fraud very quickly, drawing broad conclusions. Perhaps I'm naive, but I think many Ponzi schemes start off as legitimate investment opportunities, but derail as they grow and the strategy falters. Charles Ponzi himself saw a legitimate opportunity. He saw a potential for profit in the difference in currency for return stamps. He failed to execute on the vision and failed to tell his investors when the investments didn't work. Enron started off a legitimate company taking an innovative approach to energy.

It became so focused on hitting its earnings that it started doctoring the books to hit the numbers. The guy on the street corner trying to sell foreign tourists an interest in the Brooklyn Bridge is a different kind of criminal. Professor Frankel does point out some interesting ways that society views investment fraudsters and their victims.

We take a much harsher view of the scam artist that convinced an elderly pensioner to invest her small amount of lifetime savings, than millionaire scam artists skimming millions from other millionaires. Feb 26, Mary Whisner rated it liked it Shelves: law-not-criminal , crime-and-punishment.

Figures 9 and Figure 10 compare China's EBIT margins and assets turns with global levels while China's current numbers have converged with those globally, on our projections, China's margins could fall to 7. For sector details and global comparisons, see Appendix B. My view The above considerations have certainly weighed on the Chinese stock market over the last year. Slowing infrastructure development, reduced demand for exports, persistently high inflation and the attempted reining in of property speculation are among other issues that tempered investor appetite for equities.

The weakness of the stock market is not passing unremarked in Beijing. Lowering of transaction taxes, allowing the banking sector greater leeway in setting both interest and deposit rates, allowing the currency to weaken modestly and attempting to promote the consumer sector are all aimed at reinvigorating the domestic economy.

Beel Brothers LLC has reduced its breeding herd by selling heifers to feedlots, which means there's going to be a smaller amount of cattle available to the packing plants next year, he said. The slide in output may not stop until or , Rachel J. Once the herd starts to expand, it takes more than two years to boost supplies, according to Ron Plain, a livestock economist at the University of Missouri.

Calves have a nine-month gestation period and take about 20 months to reach slaughter weight, he said. My view The US drought continues to put pressure on a significant proportion of the farming community. Many are responding to the challenge by advancing the slaughter schedule for their animals in an effort to control costs.

The result is that supply has increased at least temporarily but this is unlikely to last since there will be less new supply next year. This could put upward pressure on prices over the medium term. It has at least paused above , having become overbought in the short-term, but a sustained move below that level would be required to indicate more than temporary supply dominance. The bulk of the recent advance has been caused by the run-up in grain and bean prices.

At the same time, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act upheld by the Supreme Court in June will add more patients to Medicaid, which provides coverage for the poor. Stifel Financial Corp. Obviously the list is getting shorter and shorter just because you've had a lot of transactions, but I think a lot of these bigger companies want to boost their Medicaid and Medicare businesses because those are the areas that are growing.

My view When I last reviewed health insurers on June 28th , there was considerable variability in the performance of the respective shares. What has become evident over the intervening months is the considerable amount of consolidation going on inside the sector. Aetna moving to acquire Coventry Healthcare is but one example. The pace of takeovers suggests that there is still potential for some further consolidation. Email of the day on an addition to the Chart Library:. It as a new MLP.
